About Naji Al-Ali:
From approximately 1975 through 1987 Naji Al-Ali created cartoons that depict the complexities of the plight of Palestinian refugees. Handala, the refugee child who is present in every cartoon, remains a potent symbol in the Palestinian struggle for the right of return and self-determination. Â
Naji Al-Ali remains one of the most popular cartoonist in the Arab world. With brutal honesty, Naji Al-Ali analyzed the relationships between the governments of the United States, Israel and the Arab regimes and the ramifications for the Palestinians. Time Magazine described him saying, "This man draws with human bones." The Asahi Newspaper, in Japan, once wrote, "Naji Al-Ali draws using phosphoric acid."
For his daring political cartoons Naji Al-Ali was assassinated as he walked towards the offices of Al-Qabas newspaper in London. He died in the hospital on August 29th. Before his death he wrote: ?Handala, who I created, will not end after my end. I hope that this is not an exaggeration when I say that I will continue to live with Handala, even after I die.?
