8:00 Speakers and Discussion

In the spring of 2006, democratic elections saw a majority of Palestinians support a new government under Hamas. Stephen Harper's Tory government shamefully led the international community in imposing a siege on the Palestinian people for exercising their democracy under Israeli occupation, the first time in human history that sanctions have been imposed on a people under occupation. Since then, the US,EU, Canada and Israel have worked to bolster the regime of Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) as he works to negotiate away the historic rights of the Palestinian people to the delight of the Israeli apartheid regime.

Hear a panel of expert speakers explain the roots of the current crisis in Palestine, the role of the Canadian government in supporting Israeli apartheid, and how we can organize solidarity to support the people of Palestine.

This event is also a launch of the acclaimed book, Between the Lines: Readings on Israel, the Palestinians, and the U.S. War on Terror, co-edited by Toufic Haddad and Tikva Honig-Parnass (see below for more info).

Organized by Palestine House, and endorsed by a coalition of supporters including: Canadian Arab Federation; Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid; The Muslim Unity; Toronto Coalition to Stop the War; Not in Our Name (NION)-Jewish Voices Against Israel's Wars; Trade Unionists Against the War; and others.

Comments on: Between the Lines: Readings on Israel, the Palestinians, and the U.S. War on Terror

TOUFIC HADDAD, a Palestinian American, and TIKVA HONIG-PARNASS, a Jewish Israeli, were co-editors of the Jerusalem-based journal Between the Lines.

- NOAM CHOMSKY, author of The Fateful Triangle: "The destruction of a nation is not an everyday event in history. It is being carried out before our eyes, systematically and consciously, with cruelty and self-righteousness, and with the backing of the global superpower. These acute and informed essays develop a perspective on the background and unfolding of these events that is remote from anything likely to be heard in the West. They merit close attention and thoughtful consideration."

- GILBERT ACHCAR, author of The Clash of Barbarisms: "This collection from the very much missed bulletin Between the Lines gives an idea of the considerable accumulated debt that all those passionately interested in the Israel-Palestine issue owe Tikva Honig-Parnass and Toufic Haddad. This book also shows how fortunate it is that Honig-Parnass and Haddad have not ceased writing. Their writings are essential contributions to a radical left assessment of Middle East politics. The long introduction alone is a masterly synopsis of the histories of Zionism, Israel, and the Palestinian people, and makes the book well worth acquiring."
